MedicX Pharmacy Rotherham offers introductory session for students at the University of Sheffield

MedicX Pharmacy Rotherham has established an 'Introduction to Pharmacy' session for dental students at the University of Sheffield.  The one hour sessions are being held with a new group of students every six weeks, during their attendance at the teacher training unit located in the same building as the MedicX Pharmacy.

The sessions cover a range of topics including:

  • Dental Formulary: Physically looking at the products thatcan be prescribed and noting differences between tablets and capsules.
  • Prescriptions: Emphasising common errors made on dental prescriptions, such as missing dates, quantity of medication required, type of medication required i.e. liquid or tablets required.
  • Emphasising the prescribing of sugar free products wherever possible.
  • Methadone Programme: Students are introduced to the theory behind the use of methadone and the specific oral hygiene issues that patients on these type of programmes may encounter.

Dhevan Pillay, Pharmacy Manager, MedicX Pharmacy Rotherham, comments:

"We started running these sessions in April and the feedback has been very encouraging, in fact, a number of local dentists have indicated that they would like to attend a similar session in the future.  Linking up with local pharmacists can provide a great source of support and advice, and this is something that we always advise the students to do when they set-up in practice."
